The 91proÊÓƵ (HCDSB) continues to lead the province in environmental sustainability and responsible energy management.
For the third consecutive year, HCDSB has been ranked the most energy efficient school board in Ontario, according to the . The report, released on June 4, 2026, analyzes publicly reported annual energy data from more than 4800 schools and education facilities across 72 Ontario school boards.
This year’s recognition marks another milestone in HCDSB’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship. After placing third in the province in 2023 and rising to first in 2024, HCDSB has maintained the top ranking for three consecutive years – a distinction unmatched by any other school board in Ontario.
The rankings compare actual energy consumption against top-quartile energy performance targets established using pre-pandemic benchmarks, recognizing school boards that consistently operate their facilities with exceptional efficiency.
“This achievement reflects years of thoughtful planning, innovation, and a shared commitment to sustainability across our system,” said Ryan Merrick, Chief Operations and Sustainability Officer. “Maintaining the top position for three consecutive years is a remarkable accomplishment and demonstrates the dedication of our school communities, staff and Facilities team in making responsible energy use part of our daily operations.”
Since 2007, Sustainable Schools has supported school boards across Canada in improving energy performance, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and identifying opportunities to create more sustainable learning environments.
This achievement reflects HCDSB’s commitment to continuous improvement and responsible stewardship of public resources. By prioritizing energy efficiency and sustainability, the 91proÊÓƵ is creating learning environments that support student success while contributing to a more sustainable future.
“Achieving this recognition for a third consecutive year speaks to the collective efforts of our students, staff, school leaders, and Facilities Team,” said John Klein, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Education Officer. “Together, we are creating learning environments that are not only efficient and sustainable, but that also reflect our shared responsibility to care for the world around us. We are proud of this accomplishment and remain committed to building a more sustainable future for generations to come.”
HCDSB remains focused on reducing its environmental impact through responsible energy management, sustainable building practices, and ongoing investments that support both student success and environmental sustainability.
