June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada. This month, and every day, the 91proÊÓƵ (HCDSB) celebrates and honours the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples in our country, and in our HCDSB community.

National Indigenous History Month is a time for learning about, appreciating and acknowledging the contributions First Nations, Inuit and Métis people have made in shaping Canada. It is also an opportunity to recognize the strength of present-day Indigenous communities.

National Indigenous Peoples Day ~ June 21, 2026

National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day recognizing and celebrating the cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Indigenous peoples of Canada.

The day was first proclaimed in 1996 by then Governor General Roméo LeBlanc as National Aboriginal Day and has been observed annually on June 21. In 2017, the name was changed to National Indigenous Peoples Day.

June 21 was chosen because of its cultural significance as the Summer Solstice, a time that has long held spiritual and cultural importance for many Indigenous Peoples and communities. It is also a time when many Indigenous communities traditionally gather to celebrate their heritage, traditions, and cultures.

As National Indigenous Peoples Day falls on a Sunday this year, HCDSB schools will recognize and celebrate the day on Friday, June 19, 2026, through learning opportunities and activities that honour the rich histories, cultures, perspectives, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples.
