Celebrating Staff Excellence and Service at HCDSB /2026/06/celebrating-staff-excellence-and-service-at-hcdsb-2/ Tue, 02 Jun 2026 15:11:31 +0000 /?p=355318 On May 27th, 2026, the 91proƵ proudly honoured 159 staff members celebrating 25 years of dedicated service, and 39 staff members retiring at the end of the 2025–2026 school year, during our annual Celebration of Staff ceremony.

The evening began with a beautiful Eucharistic Celebration presided over by the Very Reverend Monsignor Cornelius O’Mahony, with support from Vlad Mamaradlo, School Chaplain at Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School.

Staff honourees were led into the ceremony by Graeme Sutherland, who offered a moving performance on the bagpipes.

Musical accompaniment was provided by the Sacred Heart of Jesus Student Choir, under the direction of Valerie McElroy and Michelle Bender. The choir was also accompanied by Marina McCallum (pianist) and Debra Bertoia (flautist).

This year’s celebration was made especially memorable through the creative efforts of our students:

  • Under the guidance of teacher Rick Karniej, students in the SHSM program at Corpus Christi handcrafted elegant maple charcuterie boards for our 25-year honourees, and designed and produced beautiful cheeseboards for our retirees.
  • Floral Arrangements: Stunning floral arrangements were created by students in the Horticulture SHSM program at Notre Dame, under the leadership of teacher Jake Coleiro.

The ceremony reflected the spirit of our Catholic learning community – a community rooted in faith, service, and excellence. It was a meaningful opportunity to recognize the dedication of our staff while showcasing the remarkable talents, creativity, and contributions of students from across the 91proƵ.

Congratulations to all of this year’s staff honourees and retirees! Thank you for your years of faithful service, commitment to student success, and lasting contributions to Catholic education in Halton. Your dedication has made a profound difference in the lives of students, families, and colleagues.

Celebrating Ontario Day: Honouring Our Shared History, Heritage and Future /2026/05/celebrating-ontario-day-honouring-our-shared-history-heritage-and-future/ Fri, 29 May 2026 16:22:16 +0000 /?p=355299 On June 1, schools across Ontario will recognize Ontario Day, a provincial observance that celebrates the people, cultures, histories, and contributions that have shaped our province.

Established under the Ontario Day Act, June 1 marks the anniversary of the day in 1867 when Ontario officially became a province. Ontario Day provides an opportunity to reflect on our shared history, celebrate the rich diversity of our communities, and learn more about the people, places, and events that continue to shape Ontario today.

At the 91proƵ (HCDSB), Ontario Day aligns with our commitment to fostering learning environments where students develop a deeper understanding of the communities in which they live, learn, and serve. Through age-appropriate learning activities, students will explore Ontario’s history, geography, cultures, achievements, and the many contributions of First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and diverse communities that have helped shape our province.

Ontario is home to more than 16 million people and is one of the most diverse places in the world. As we celebrate Ontario Day, we recognize the importance of learning from our past, appreciating the contributions of those who came before us, and working together to build a more inclusive and hopeful future for all.

Throughout the day, students across HCDSB will participate in learning experiences that encourage curiosity, reflection, and civic engagement while exploring what it means to be part of Ontario’s story.

As a Catholic learning community, we are called to honour the dignity of every person and to celebrate the gifts and experiences that strengthen our communities. Ontario Day offers an opportunity to reflect on our shared responsibility to care for one another and contribute positively to the province we call home.

HCDSB Celebrates National Indigenous History Month /2026/05/national-indigenous-history-month-2026/ Fri, 29 May 2026 16:00:00 +0000 /?p=355286 June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada. This month, and every day, the 91proƵ (HCDSB) celebrates and honours the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples in our country, and in our HCDSB community.

National Indigenous History Month is a time for learning about, appreciating and acknowledging the contributions First Nations, Inuit and Métis people have made in shaping Canada. It is also an opportunity to recognize the strength of present-day Indigenous communities.

National Indigenous Peoples Day ~ June 21, 2026

National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day recognizing and celebrating the cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Indigenous peoples of Canada.

The day was first proclaimed in 1996 by then Governor General Roméo LeBlanc as National Aboriginal Day and has been observed annually on June 21. In 2017, the name was changed to National Indigenous Peoples Day.

June 21 was chosen because of its cultural significance as the Summer Solstice, a time that has long held spiritual and cultural importance for many Indigenous Peoples and communities. It is also a time when many Indigenous communities traditionally gather to celebrate their heritage, traditions, and cultures.

As National Indigenous Peoples Day falls on a Sunday this year, HCDSB schools will recognize and celebrate the day on Friday, June 19, 2026, through learning opportunities and activities that honour the rich histories, cultures, perspectives, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples.

Pride Month at HCDSB /2026/05/pride-month-at-hcdsb-2/ Fri, 29 May 2026 15:49:19 +0000 /?p=355284 June is designated as Pride Month in Canada, and throughout the month, our HCDSB schools will be raising awareness around Pride Month and nurturing our call to build safe and inclusive learning environments where every student and every member of the community is welcomedvalued, and respected

As Catholic educators, we believe that we are all made in the image and likeness of God, who created us and loves us unconditionally – just as we are. We are called to know, love and celebrate one another, just as God knows, loves and celebrates each one of us because we are “wonderfully made.” We honour the inherent dignity in each other by treating one another with sensitivity, compassion and respect.

During the month of June, our HCDSB schools will journey alongside the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in creating spaces of welcome in a search of dignity and justice for all. The information shared with students will be age-appropriate and consistent with grade-level curriculum expectations. As with all material that is taught in our Catholic schools, it will be presented through the lens of our Catholic faith.

Click here to review the student learning goals by division.

In keeping with the 91proƵ motion passed on January 18, 2022, throughout the month of June, our Catholic Education Centre and each of our HCDSB schools will fly the Pride flag as a symbol of our commitment to nurturing safe, welcoming and inclusive communities. Schools and the Catholic Education Centre will raise the Pride flag on the first instructional day in June – this year, that date falls on Monday, June 1, 2026.
